Ok, that’s that episode over with, back to the bike.

I struggle with my cycling. I put one heck of a lot of work in whether you know it or not. I am crazy in that I ride many miles in all sorts of weather. I may love it and I do it because I love it but there is in me this drive to do it to the best of my ability. I’ve been meaning to write about this for a while but never got round to it.

I’m getting round to it today because I’ve been following the progress of a fellow fat cycling blogger by the name of Toby. Find him here http://fatcyclerider.blogspot.com. At 18 stone now and on a mountain bike Toby did his longest ride to date today. He rode the London to Brighton sportive, 53.9 miles 6h20m. moving time 5h18m. 10.1mph average. His data is available here http://ridewithgps.com/trips/59518

Anyway he is very rightly proud of himself but said he was unhappy with his general speed and technique to which I suggested finding like minded cyclists, you know like a club? he said he wanted to get better and he wasn’t good enough to join a club yet…..

There’s that word again. Enough. Andy keeps telling me to take heart, that I’m faster than I think I am and to not be so hard on myself. Well do you want to know a secret? I’m not that hard on myself, I know what I can do.

I have this internal conversation that I envisage with any cyclist. It goes one of two ways;

1)I say “could you be any faster?” they say “yes”. Conversation over.

2)Or they say “no” and I say “why do you work so hard at it then?”.

Come on,we know the second option is boo hickey. Even a pro will tell you they are never fast enough. There is no thing as enough. I know now I am a passable cyclist, not the slowest and certainly not the fastest though I am more than pleased with my progress, I work because I am not fast ENOUGH and never will be. The thing I do know is that neither are you. I also know that riding with the faster better cyclists gets me there quicker. It helps if they are fabulous people like my clubmates. Go for it Toby, you’ll be laughing last. Well done lad, sit down on your sofa and feel replete.

Hey you, there will ALWAYS be someone faster than you whether you are Lance Armstrong or Cakeface and equally there will ALWAYS be someone slower…….FACT. You have achieved a great deal – don’t just own your achievements, celebrate them 🙂 x

  2. Roger Says:

I fear there are not that many cycling clubs that have easier rides like ours, but it’s certainly worth finding out if there is a local one. Maybe the CTC have a local section.

Only if everyone else joins in too. Gowan,, tell me how fab I am. I’ve been force fed school dinner carrot cake by the bean today. I’m positively giddy. 🙂

Even if there’s not there are always workmates and friends, so Toby says. It never does much harm to open your gob and ask either, you lose nothing but a bit of pride and some carbon dioxide.

  3. Cycling never gets easier, you just ride harder, faster for longer.

I learnt that off Gaz of the 39 stone cyclist fame.

  4. Toby Field Says:

Clive has hit the nail on the head with his comment. However, I know how much progress I’ve made and most people acknowledge this but for some it is not enough. I feel I need to prove to them that I am good enough but only by beating them will I know that. The doubters need to be shut up and I want to bask in the glory when I do it :o)

    • Joby Says:

Yup, your right Toby – although I’d change the words “shut up” to “f**k off” *

      * starred because I realised cakeface had commented! See, I do have some manners 🙂

I have to agree with Toby really. I know its probably the wrong attitude, but I’d love to join a club except for the fact that its more lonely starting off with a pack of riders and being left behind, than it is starting out alone on your own ride like I do now.

Congrats on the L to B ride to Toby. I did it many years ago. All I can remember thinking is “what a stupid place to stick Ditchling Beacon”…right at the end!

Hi Adrian, It’s nice to meet you.

I can see how that would be daunting but really, any group of people may be helpful. I think you can learn a lot by watching how other people handle their bikes.
I know I’m really lucky. When I first started riding they refused to leave me behind, there was always someone there to help me and they do that for anyone who turns up. I have a great club though. I don’t tend to ride with the Wansbeck lads (my secondary club) as much because I really do struggle to keep up with them. Mind, when I do I get one hell of a workout. 😀

  6. […] So Right 😛 Posted on June 25, 2010 by carrie A few days ago I posted here: http://www.notthewowy.co.uk/2010/06/20/enough/ about being fast enough, when I did I also spoke about a fellow blogger who didn’t feel good […]
